Prvi muharrem, kada počinje hidžretska godina, računa se od Hidžre, odnosno od fizičkog preseljenja poslanika Muhammeda a.s. i prvih muslimana iz Mekke u Medinu, što se dogodilo 622. godine po gregorijanskom kalendaru.
Islamska zajednica prati dva kalendara. Jedan je po miladu, tačnije po rođenju Isaa a.s. i naziva se gregorijanski kalendar, a drugi je hidžretski kalendar.
Jedan hidžretski mjesec ima prosječno 29 dana, 12 sati, 44 minute i tri sekunde, ali se radi lakšeg računanja zaokružuju na 29, odnosno 30 dana, ali ne naizmjeničnim strogim redoslijedom, pošto se mogu ponoviti uzastopno dva, tri, pa i četiri mjeseca po 30, odnosno 29 dana.
U ciklusu od 30 godina, 19 godina hidžretskih godina ima po 354 dana i 11 prestupnih godina ima po 355 dana.
