Često konzumiranje paradajza i drugih vrsta voća i povrća, koje sadrže visok nivo likopena, u novoj studiji je povezano s manjim rizikom obolijevanja od raka bubrega.
Inače, likopen je antioksidant odgovoran za boju paradajza, lubenica, grejpfruta i papaje, a ranija istraživanja povezala su unos likopena s manjim rizikom za razvoj karcinoma pluća i želuca.
Novi nalazi su prikupljeni tokom posljednjih 20 godina od gotovo 9.200 ispitanica koje su prošle menopauzu.
U prosjeku su učesnice istraživanja s najvećim unosom likopena imale 45 odsto manji rizik obolijevanja od raka bubrega nego ispitanice koje su konzumirale najmanje količine.
Naučnici vjeruju da je dobijene nalaze moguće objasniti uticajem likopena na smanjenje oksidativnog stresa povezanog s razvojem raka bubrega.
Prema podacima za SAD, rak bubrega je deveti najčešći oblik karcinoma u toj zemlji, oko dva odsto svih slučajeva raka u Americi se odnosi na rak bubrega.
