Residents Adopted the Declaration for the Rescue of Brezna: Entry Banned to Corrupt Politicians, Greedy Tycoons, Alcazar Energy and CGES

The residents of Brezna, more than 200 of them, today signed the Declaration for the Rescue of Brezna, which, as they say, obliges present and future generations to preserve tradition and nature, and not allow anyone to turn this village into a high-voltage hub. The state and the state-owned energy company CGES intend to build a 400kV substation in the very heart of this village, and later an international energy hub, which would mean the end of rural tourism, every economic activity, and life itself in the village.

They once again reminded that CGES, in the project documentation submitted to the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD)—based on which it obtained a €28 million loan for the construction of the 400kV substation—lied by claiming that within a 2 km radius there are no houses, while in fact there are 150. With the Declaration, they also called on the international community to help them protect their human rights.

“Gornja Brezna is the only village in the municipality of Plužine that is developing, growing, and attracting new residents, while the local government and the state are working on its destruction—contrary to all common sense and contrary to all the country’s strategic documents,” the residents said. They emphasize that for their own state they are still “a village that does not exist,” and that if the authorities continue to refuse to see, hear, and support them, they will radicalize their protests.

“If they continue to ignore us, we will move our protests to Podgorica, in front of the Government building, where many other dissatisfied citizens whose rights are being trampled will join us. We had hoped that this was over, but it turns out that the same pattern continues: the same neglectful attitude of the state towards its citizens, and the same submissive, corrupt relationship towards privileged, arrogant, and greedy investors,” said the residents gathered in the Citizens’ Initiative Save Brezna.

At the entrance to the village of Brezna, they placed large billboards reminding everyone of the village’s proud history and the enormous contribution of their ancestors to the anti-fascist struggle. The billboards also state that entry to Brezna is forbidden to the companies Wind Park Bijela and Alcazar Energy, to CGES, as well as to corrupt politicians and greedy tycoons.

“All of them, as we have informed the public, treat our entire village and hundreds of us residents like insects, as if we do not exist, brutally trampling all our human rights. That is why we clearly wrote at the entrance to the village that all good people are welcome, but this billboard is the final stop for occupiers and traitors of their own people,” they emphasize. They repeat that their resistance and struggle will not stop until the planned international energy monster is relocated to a site where it will not endanger houses, properties, and the entire human community—and they stress that there are many such locations in the Piva region.
